Spend a few days over a weekend this winter enjoying a classic New England destination. Newport, Rhode Island, serves up a bevy of fun winter events.
On Nov. 29, catch Newport Harbor’s Illuminated Boat Parade & Block Party, 4–8 p.m. This free event includes watching the cheerily lit boats vie for first place in the best-decorated contest. Live musicians fill the air with holiday tunes. You’ll want to make time to stop by one of the waterside restaurants for dinner with a Christmas-y view.
On Dec. 7, don’t miss the 49th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Bowen’s Wharf. The festivities kick off with caroling and visits from your favorite Christmas characters, including Frosty, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Restaurants on the wharf are open for business and many boutiques offer free refreshments (think hot apple cider and baked goods) for browsers looking for that perfect holiday gift.
Of course, you can’t miss Christmas at the Newport Mansions, Nov. 23–Jan. 1. The iconic, historic homes in Newport’s Mansion District are decked out in their best Yuletide finery. Visit The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House this holiday season for delightful Christmas tours.
Seasonal bay tours are also a must when in Newport over the winter. November through April, Save the Bay offers seal tours so you can observe the adorable seals at Citing Rock. October through December, you can catch a nature cruise to view the other winter wildlife and maybe some fall foliage, too.

Known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this stretch of the Florida Panhandle is often overlooked for more well-known destinations in the state, such as Panama City Beach, Miami and Tampa.
