Cairn App Brings Safety to Off-Grid Travel

No one wants to get lost in the woods, and Cairn makes it less likely that, in the event you are lost, you’ll be impossible to locate.

The hiking safety app allows you to enter the details of your trip and then alert friends and family of your plans. It facilitates a step you should be taking anyway, but allows you to share trip details in a seamless and thorough way.

You add the route, the time you should return and contact information into the Safety Circle section. Cairn takes it from there, keeping your contacts up to date on your progress.

“Cairn makes it easy to share trip plans with safety contacts. If a user does not check in on time we send overdue alerts with a user’s tracks, while tracking. The user is also mapping cell coverage which we crowdsource and show to all on topo maps. Essentially outdoor enthusiasts can find a signal when they need to call rescue or share an Instagram post,” says Ali Almai, co-founder.

The app is growing, which increases its usefulness: “Next week we’ll be passing the 2 million points of cell coverage mapped by the Cairn community worldwide but have the most data in US National Parks, Colorado 14ers, California, Oregon, Washington State, and British Columbia,” says Alami.

The app is currently free on iOS, with premium features available.
