Reviews / Restaurant

Nestled between the Theater and Garment Districts of Manhattan in New York City, you’ll find Arno Ristorante, an Italian delight.

Arno offers northern Italian cuisine in a traditional, upscale setting. The restaurant caters to the lunchtime crowd of the Garment District and the evening crowd of Madison Square Garden event-goers and Broadway performers. The top floor of the restaurant includes a large bar area with seating for diners next to the window, seating directly above the bar and two dining rooms, one which can be partitioned off for private party. The downstairs includes restrooms and a large private open space, capable of hosting 10–200 guests.

The décor includes the predictable Italian restaurant trappings: white-tablecloths, floral etched-glass partitions, classic Italian paintings and red-jacketed waiters with matching red ties.

Last month, my family and I spent the day in New York City, seeing the Radio City Rockettes and Jersey Boys, topped off with dinner at Arno. We arrived a few minutes before our 5:15 p.m., reservation and were seated right away. Dezi, the same waiter we had in July, served us, and happened to remember my mom and I.

We ordered several appetizers: the prosciutto e melone, consommé con pastina soup, crostini di mozzarella and the caprese salad. All delicious, but my favorite was the crostini di mozzarella — it’s so subtly breaded it’s hard to believe it’s actually fried. For dinner I had the gnocchi al pesto, which tasted heavenly. The gnocchi melted in my mouth and was dressed in just the right amount of pesto sauce.

For dessert, I ordered a vanilla napoleon — surprisingly not as sweet as it sounds. It was light and flaky, made to perfection. Who could pass up a rolling dessert cart? It’s a delectable ending to a wonderful day in the city.
