Before we had podcasts, we had campfires and sleepovers when brave friends would circle around and tell the scariest stories they knew. Taking a wild guess here, most of those stories probably weren’t real, but now you can listen to some that are. Take in true crime stories the new old-fashioned way — by podcast.
For Comedy Fans
My Favorite Murder is as close to having a true crime conversation with your funny girlfriends as you can get to the real thing. Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff choose a different murder, true crime or “I survived” story each episode and share all the research and inside information with each other — all with a bit of dark humor, goofy sarcasm and quick wit.
The Last Podcast on the Left is hosted by three friends — two do extensive research on crazy UFO stories, true crime and generally creepy stories, while the third listens in and learns with the audience. While one narrator tells the story in great detail, another pipes in with more information and all chime in with hilarious comments, questions and divergences. Each story takes a few episodes to complete and it’s interesting and laugh-out-loud funny.
Serious Mini Series
In the Dark details one specific story each season. It began in 2017 with season one focused on the investigation of the abduction of Jacob Wetterling; season two arrives this spring and focuses on another true crime story. The investigation, real audio footage and incredible detail involved in the production completely sucks the listener in.
Up and Vanished is a one-off podcast focusing on the investigation of the disappearance of Tara Grinstead, a high school teacher in Georgia. If the impressive research and story telling is what you like to hear, check this out.
