Lake Mashu was formed from a volcano and is thought to be the clearest lake in the entire world. It’s also incredibly deep — the bottom is 694 feet below the surface. The volcano is still active so take a dip at your own risk.

Mount Zao

While Mount Zao is an impressive volcano in its own right, the area is most widely known for its lake. The Five Color Pond actually changes colors depending on the season. You’ll have to visit it at least five different times throughout the year to get the full effect.

Matsushima is a collection of 260 islands covered in palm trees. It’s a spectacular sight, especially when visiting during the changing of the leaves. Book a boat tour to glimpse as much of these islands as time will allow.
