The Snowdonia National Park covers 823 square miles of North Wales, taking in a huge variety of stunning landscapes. Here are five of the best.
Snowdon
An ascent of Snowdon should be top of the billing for any visit to Snowdonia. If you are feeling fit, the hike takes an average three hours from various jumping-off points, while there is also a train that can take you to the top.
Llyn Tegid, Bala
Sometimes referred to as Bala Lake, Llyn Tegid is the biggest natural lake in Wales. In addition to stunning views, the lake provides a venue for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.
Portmeirion
On the coast at the edge of the national park lies Portmeirion, an Italianate seaside resort built by architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925–1976. Originally built to show how an area of natural beauty could be developed without ruining it, the site was used as a set for the famous UK television series The Prisoner. Today, it provides an interesting daytrip for fans of the series and architecture in general.
Harlech Castle
Built in 1283, this castle looks over Cardigan Bay from the charming town of Harlech. Explore the historic fortification before heading off for a stroll on the long sandy beach.
Ffestinog Railway
Narrow-gauge railways such as this one were traditionally used to transport slate and other minerals. These days the Ffestinog Railway takes tourists from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port of Porthmadog, crossing a variety of fascinating landscapes.
