A new cycling trail just opened between Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 100-mile trail is paved and follows the old Austro-Hungarian railway line.
The trail aims to bring tourists back to the picturesque landscape vacated during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. The trail aims to act not only as a scenic route, but as an open-air museum, and is part of a European Union-funded, cross-border collaboration between Bosnia and Croatia.
The aim is to preserve the old Ciro railway line for its historic heritage as well as aesthetic appeal. The line passes through abandoned towns and the Vjetrenica caves. Hotels along the route are converted railway stations, and other attractions include Roman ruins and an ornate Orthodox church.
The hope is that the trail will attract enough visitors to revitalize some of the areas it passes, thus providing new development opportunities along the route.
