For many, golf is what retired people play in silly pants. This is not to say that since Tiger Woods hit the scene two decades ago the sport didn’t enjoy a revival, but the more than 30 worldwide TopGolf Centers are again truly changing the game and making it something that doesn’t require expensive equipment or a day off.

TopGolf centers offer golf that is fun by providing multilevel structures and climate-controlled bays for target golf. Each ball is equipped with a microchip and aimed at colorfully lit targets between 20 and 240 yards. The sensors in the targets in conjunction with the chips in the balls judge distance and accuracy and automatically score the player in one of the many available games. It’s almost like the scoring you expect from a modern-day bowling alley.

You needn’t be an experienced golfer to enjoy TopGolf and that’s the company’s goal. Most centers offer fantastic food, multiple bars, live music and hundreds of flat-screen televisions for enjoying your favorite sport while you’re playing something completely different.

This is about fun first and is meant to appeal to the beginner, novice and professional alike. The game is absolutely tearing down the barriers and giving duffers around the world a whole new take on a sport many view as stodgy or a waste of time and money.

While futuristic, TopGolf is by no means virtual as you swing real clubs, hit real balls and more than half of the 15 million that will play this year describe themselves as “non-golfers.”
