What to Eat at the Foodhallen in Amsterdam

Amsterdam offers temptation on every corner, from fine art at the Rijksmuseum (including the recently renovated The Night Watch by Rembrandt) to the warm stroopwafel, filled with a thin layer of sweet, caramel-like syrup, sold at markets and from street carts. But where to find a great meal for those on the go among the canals and narrow streets?

The Foodhallen, the first indoor food market in The Netherlands situated in the old train depot in Amsterdam Oud West, has stalls offering street food from different ethnic influences like Turkish, Spanish, French, Asian and even American. Go with an empty stomach and a full mind to try a little of something from each stall.

Try a hamburger Amsterdam–style at The Butcher; dig into paper cones of velvety-soft jamon iberico at Jabugo; sample traditional bitterballen stuffed with truffle or chorizo in béchamel at De BallenBar; Viet view for bahn mi; and Petite Gateau for fruit tarts and chocolate pastries, all of which can be enjoyed on foot while heading to your next sightseeing stop.
