Under $100: Bruges

Along with a few other canal-based, northern European cities, Bruges is often referred to as the “Venice of the North.” The capital and largest city in the Flemish Region of Belgium is an important port city and its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most well-preserved medieval areas in Europe. Another great aspect of this incredible destination is how easy it is to enjoy on a budget.

Many of the city’s most impressive sights can be appreciated for free. Notable landmarks include the Church of Our Lady, one of the world’s highest brick towers; the sculpture of Madonna and Child, believed to be Michelangelo’s only sculpture to leave Italy within his lifetime; the renowned 13^th-century belfry; Begijnhof Brugge, the only preserved beguinage (similar to a convent) in Bruges; the Old St. John’s Hospital, built in the mid-12^th century; and the city’s many preserved gateways.

Art lovers can’t miss the Groeningemuseum (€8), built on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey. It houses six centuries worth of Flemish and Belgian works, including primitive art and works by a range of Renaissance and Baroque masters.

Best known for its chocolate, waffles, fries and beer, Belgium is a culinary wonderland. For some of the best beer in Bruges, paired with meat and cheese, locate the semi-hidden De Garre pub and restaurant. For a great breakfast, including waffles, head to Sale et Sucre or At Tattie’s. For an affordable, authentic Belgium dinner and a comfortable atmosphere, head to Belgian Pigeon House, Herberg Vlissinghe or De Verloren Hoek.

Walking, biking and public transportation are the best options price-wise in Bruges. Taxis are far too expensive. There are car-free, clearly marked bike paths around the city, and daily bike rentals are only a few euro. The public bus costs only around €1–2, and they run frequently throughout the city and to surrounding areas.
