A port city in Northeast Scotland, Aberdeen is known as the Granite City for its historic gray architecture. However, there’s much to see and do in this seaside escape.
Grab brunch at Rye & Soda, where you can, of course, enjoy a full Scottish breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, a grilled tomato, mushrooms, scone, baked beans and toast, or go for a lighter option with the smoked salmon or bacon and poached eggs toast, served with baked beans and smashed avocado. Regardless of your choice, you’ll come away only spending at most £12.
See a little of the city’s history with a visit to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum. The award-winning attraction covers shipbuilding, fishing, port history and displays on the North Sea oil and gas industry. It also includes a home built in 1593 and unbeatable views of the harbor. Better yet? Admission is free!
A few spots worth stopping by for a quick pic? Marischal College is the second-largest granite building in the world, a blend of two architectural styles from the 19th century and currently no longer a college but the headquarters for the Aberdeen City Council. Also mark your walking itinerary for a quick spot by the William Wallace and Robert Burns statues.
Grab lunch at Angus & Ale, specializing in dry-aged burgers topped with pickled gherkins and served with rosemary-salted fries. If you’re not up for a burger, you can enjoy two types of veggie burgers, mac and cheese with a variety of mix-ins, buffalo chicken or cauliflower wings and chicken burgers. Lunch can easily be had for less than £15. Save room for dessert — the banoffee sundae includes shortbread, banana, caramel and vanilla ice cream, toffee sauce and whipped cream.
In the afternoon, enjoy a visit to the Tolbooth Museum, which, no, does not celebrate the history of the tollbooth. Instead, it displays both local history and the development of crime and punishment. Set inside one of the city’s oldest buildings and best-preserved gaols from the 1600s, it includes prison cells from the 1600s onward, as well as a guillotine from the same time period.
After what might be a macabre, yet educational outing, head over to The Tippling House for drinks and bar food to end your evening the right way. The menu includes items such as miso-glazed bream, honey and beer roast duck and butternut squash cannelloni. The craft cocktails include fun choices like the Fair Maid (gin, ginger, elderflower, lime, apple, mint, cucumber and soda) and the Spring Pea (tequila, mezcal, pea gave, lime and wasabi).
