Under $100: Buffalo, N.Y.

With Niagara nearby, Buffalo may be overlooked. Don’t make the mistake of missing out on all this northern New York destination has to offer.

Grab a coffee and breakfast at Tipico. With lots of locally roasted and high-end coffee varieties to choose from, even the snobbiest coffee aficionados will find something to love. The shop is also the site of the largest kachelofen in North America. The seasonal food menu revolves around toast items (think avocado, pea pesto and chèvre with walnut honey) using locally baked breads. Expect to pay less than $5 for a large coffee, and less than $10 for your breakfast item.

Spend the morning browsing the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, where 150 years of compilation produced an extraordinary art collection. Exhibits always change, but are sure to delight. Admission is $15.

For lunch, it’s crucial you try a Buffalo favorite — beef on weck, featuring horseradish on fresh roast beef piled high on a salty kimmelweck roll. Try the classic and homey Bar Bill Tavern for less than $15.

Walk off lunch at The Buffalo History Museum, housed in a National Historic Landmark building built in 1901 for the Pan-American Exposition. The museum traces the development of both Buffalo and Niagara. Top exhibits include the Apostolic Clock and exhibits featuring Buffalo natives and the city’s role in world events such as World War I. Admission is $10.

Pick up some of Buffalo’s signature candy, sponge candy, at one of the local favorites. Sponge candy is crunchy honeycomb toffee covered in chocolate. Alethea’s Chocolates is the place to go, and you can take home a box for $20. If sponge candy doesn’t sound up your alley, they serve a variety of other gourmet chocolate and non-chocolate candies, plus ice cream.

Dinner has to be Buffalo chicken wings. Anchor Bar is credited with making the bar favorite an American classic. If you stop by and discover you love them, you can even get them shipped all over the United States. A single order of wings is less than $15.
