It’s practically a must to visit some sort of stunning architecture while you’re in Charleston, and you certainly won’t be short on options. Maybe tour Drayton Hall (America’s oldest preserved plantation home still open to the public, $22); Middleton Place House Museum, a National Historic Landmark built in 1755 ($28); or the Calhoun Mansion, the city’s largest private home and house museum, filled with opulent decor ($16).

Grab lunch at The Glass Onion, a farm-to-table eatery that combines South Carolina and Louisiana flair. Lunch can be had for less than $10 and includes options like overstuffed sandwiches (think pimento cheese, a classic Southern favorite, or a fried green tomato po boy) and salmon croquette with grits.

See where the Civil War all started with a trip to Fort Sumter. Now a National Park site, this popular attraction sits on an island in Charleston Harbor, requiring a ferry ride that typically includes a few dolphin sightings. The ferry ride costs $21, though the park itself is free.

Hop on over to Sullivan’s Island while you’re at it, and enjoy the 3.3 square miles of quaint beachfront charm. There’s a free beach, another fort (where Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at one point) and plenty of places to walk and browse.

On Sullivan’s Island is a great little dinner spot, The Obstinate Daughter. It’s easy to get dinner for less than $20, whether you opt for wood-fired pizza, pasta or seafood. Plus, the cocktails — made with locally produced spirits — are sure to please, or you can go with a local brew.
