Nestled in a valley between the high mountains of the Karwendel Alps is the Austrian city of Innsbruck, a destination renowned for its history and mountain and winter sport culture.
As the seat of the imperial court of Maximilian I in the 1490s, the city has a long history, well preserved in its landmarks like the Altstadt von Innsbruck, Ambras Castle and Stadtturm tower. History exists alongside contemporary landmarks, such as The Nordkette funicular with futuristic stations designed by architect Zaha Hadid, climbing more than 7,400 feet from the city center for skiing in winter and hiking in warmer months.
A great way to see historic sites and notable landmarks throughout the city is with the all-inclusive Innsbruck Card, which offers several free services and discounts. It costs €39 for one day, and you receive free one-time admission to all museums and attractions, one return trip on lifts and cable cars in the region, free transportation on Sightseer Innsbruck, free use of public transportation, one guided city walk, a free three-hour bike rental and great discounts at local spots. If you’re only looking to hit a couple notable museums or attractions, entrance tickets usually cost less than €10.
For breakfast, visit Café Katzung, a coffeeshop decorated with antique-style paintings, serving a range of Austrian pastries like apple strudel and kaisercharm. Breakfast Club is a modern café serving local, homemade breakfast and brunch foods. For a cheap lunch or dinner, hit Speckeria for heaping amounts of fresh meat, white wine and local cheeses. Located in the center of town is Tiroler Weinstube, an Austrian-German spot serving traditional comfort foods and good beer.
