Under $100 / Europe

What better way to start the day than with something sweet? Breakfast at the café at the Chocolate House of Luxembourg provides just that. Situated opposite the Grand Ducal Palace in a medieval building from the 1400s, the menu offers not only decadent desserts, but also a variety of light, cafe-type items, such as quiche, bagels, soups and salads, most for less than €10. However, if you do decide to eat cake for breakfast, we won’t judge!

On your way out, be sure to check out the palace exterior next door before enjoying the neighborhood with its many upscale shopping options.

A tour of the Bock Casemates is a can’t-miss while in Luxembourg, and a steal at only €4 per person. The Bock Casemates is a stone fortress made up of an extensive network of tunnels and cave-like rooms, which at one time could house thousands of soldiers, livestock, kitchens, workshops and more. While the fortress was at one time much bigger, the actual casemates were never destroyed, and 10 miles of tunnels still remain, with several different levels that can take you up to 130 feet into the rock wall.

From the casemates, you’ll overlook the Old City of Luxembourg, well worth a visit itself. Take a walk around the streets, which still retain the area’s 10th-century layout, and see so many of the original public buildings, such as the historic churches.

Grab a meal at a cozy little restaurant nearby, Restaurant Bosso. Reservations are recommended. You’ll find lots of traditional regional dishes, from schnitzel to spätzle. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed comfort food that will please both your soul and your pocketbook, with many dinner options less than €15.
