Located on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., is a metro-accessible town called Silver Spring, a fairly quiet suburb with an adjacent downtown area of a few blocks. Silver Spring is considered one of D.C.’s unofficial neighborhoods, even though it is actually located across the Maryland border.
Breakfast at Tastee Diner, a Silver Spring staple. Fill up on pancakes, eggs and sausage for less than $10.
A relaxing weekend morning can be spent downtown perusing the farmers market for local products like cheese, fruit, wine and flowers. Grab a coffee and enjoy a peaceful moment or people watch and window shop among the outdoor stores. During the summer months, musicians complement the morning’s activities with calming tunes.
Continue a day of American diversity with a classic Lebanese lunch at Lebanese Taverna with soups, flatbread sandwiches and a hummus bar.
What Silver Spring lacks in big-city amenities, it makes up for in tranquil outdoor spaces. Wheaton Regional Park and Sligo Creek Park both offer acres of greenery, walking and biking paths and playgrounds for children.
Round out your day with a few beers, burgers and Old Bay tater tots at Quarry House Tavern, a down-to-earth pub with live music on select nights.
