Under $100 / Europe

The second-largest city in Greece is known as a lively and chaotic place that charms visitors. The Greeks love breakfast, and Terkenlis patisserie is a favorite in Thessaloniki. It’s most famous for its tsoureki (brioche) and strong coffee ($12).

After a huge fire in 1917, much of the city was rebuilt. There are, however, some areas that escaped untouched, including Ano Poli and its Byzantine walls. It also happens to be the highest point in the city, and taking a stroll around the area will give you an idea of the history of the place as well as help you to get your bearings.

As the culinary capital of Greece, you are spoiled for choice for places to eat in Thessaloniki. Get down with the locals and eat at Negroponte in the Ladadika district, a former hangout of prostitutes and olive oil traders that slowly gentrified. Try the fried pork with zucchini cakes and make sure to save some room for the tahini cream dessert ($15).

Walk off your lunch on the way to the White Tower, the symbol of Thessaloniki built in the 15th century. You can climb to the top of the Byzantine fortification and take a look around the museum, which focuses on the history of the city.

For dinner, go to Sempriko, a cooperative restaurant that serves locally sourced produce and traditional Greek dishes ($25). If you particularly like a dish, you can buy the ingredients you need to make it yourself from the shop next door!

Head back to Ladadika for a nightcap, as the area is famous for partying. The swanky bar at the Art Apartments boutique hotel is a hit with the fashionable crowd, while Fragile Bar gets a bit more raucous (cocktails $6).
