Singapore´s Changi Airport is already considered one of the world´s most unique and entertaining airports, with a butterfly garden, swimming pool and cinemas available to pass the time between connecting flights. However, developers have their sights set on new land near the airport where they plan to expand and rebrand the air-travel experience.
The new building will be called Terminal 4 and will feature a central gallery through which all passengers pass. A forest, rain vortex of 40 meters that travels from the ground to the ceiling, and a monorail to provide transit between terminals will capture the visual interest of all who set foot in Terminal 4. Scheduled to open in 2017, the terminal expects to see more than 82 million passengers pass through its gates per year.
Singapore drew artistic and functional inspiration from other airports around the world. The country´s purpose for this groundbreaking terminal is partly to be able to compete with and possibly surpass the capabilities of airports in other Asian cities. With self-service check-in kiosks, endless ways to entertain yourself during the downtime between flights, and world-class shopping and dining, Singapore is not only building airports, but it is also building small communities of ever-changing residents.
