From water, air quality and protection of endangered species to reforestation and sustainability, there are plenty of ways to learn more and give back on Earth Day, and these seven U.S. spots are leading the way for green efforts this April.

Trends / Top Trends

At ITB Berlin in March, the world’s top 10 sustainable travel destinations for 2019 were announced. The world’s largest tourism trade fair hosted the announcement of the countries, regions, cities and parks that made the list, compiled by representatives from 12 international travel organizations and organized by Green Destinations.

The top spot went to the island nation of Palau, which received the ITB Earth Award. Palau’s green initiatives made it a leader in the world of sustainable tourism thanks to its Palau Pledge, a request to visitors to promise to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the island. In 2020, regulations will go into effect that will ban the sale and use of sunscreens that can be harmful to reefs off the coast of the island.

In Europe, Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana was awarded the Best in Cities award; the Maltese island of Gozo won the Best of Communities and Culture award; and Portugal won the overall Best in Europe title.

Elsewhere, the Best of Africa award went to Chumbe Island in Tanzania, the Best of Asia-Pacific was awarded to Nepal’s Bardia National Park, and the Republic of Guyana won the Best in Ecotourism award.
