Destinations / North America

This year, National Park Week and International Dark Sky Week overlap, with the former taking place April 19–27 and the latter held April 21–28. You know what that means? It’s the perfect excuse to visit some of the darkest national parks in the country.

All in the same general area, Bryce Canyon National Park and Capital Reef National Park are both International Dark Sky Parks, as is nearby Kodachrome Basin State Park. For a fully immersive stay, book your spot at Clear Sky Resorts Bryce Canyon, the country’s first and only glass-dome resort. It offers uninterrupted views on an 80-acre setting.

For a little guidance through your star-gazing experience, head to Grand Canyon National Park and book a stay at Yavapai Lodge, particularly booking the stargazing package, which includes a guidebook, night vision headlamp and binoculars. Make sure to time your visit with one of the property’s monthly NASA Solar System Ambassadors presentations.

On the East Coast, visit one of the largest and darkest skysheds in this part of the country in the country’s youngest national park, New River Gorge National Park. Combine the visit with a trip to nearby Watoga State Park, Calvin Price State Forest and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, which, combined, are an official International Dark Sky Destination.
