Freedivers — divers who can handle deeper depths without the use of oxygen — now have a new tool available to help them swim into the abyss. Divers would typically use masks when swimming deep, but the Hektometer Freediving Goggles are able to handle the pressure down below without causing the air within them to compress.
Through a hands-free equalization process, these goggles “leak” pressure as you go, preventing the buildup and potential rupturing of blood vessels in the eyes. The process is simple — as you dive deeper the silicone membrane in the goggles moves toward your eyes, decreasing the volume of airspace available. As the area gets smaller, a small hole allows water to seep in to replace it. When you begin to ascend the mechanism inverts and that water is released to let the membrane expand.
The goggles are also hydrodynamic to reduce resistance, a common issue for divers who opt for masks. While these won’t do much for the first-time diver, experienced deep-sea travelers will appreciate the ability to head into the water without a mask.
The Hektometer Freediving Goggles are currently available for retail at a price of $180 each. Check out the website for more information on features and ways to order.
