Food & Drink

April 7 is an unofficial holiday in the United States — National Beer Day! In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act, effective April 7 of that year, allowing people to buy, sell and drink beer again after 13 years. There’s a plethora of options to celebrate the day, including travel packages, such as the Bed & Brew offer at The Essex Resort & Spa in Vermont, a craft beer destination. In fact, Vermont has more breweries and brewpubs per capita that any other state in the nation.

The two-night special includes breakfast daily, a tasting flight of Vermont ales and beers in the resort’s restaurant and two Vermont craft beers delivered in room upon arrival. Guests receive a map of the state’s breweries and a Vermont Brewery Challenge passport. Launching April 7, the offer will be available throughout 2015.

The Essex is 15 minutes from Burlington, as well as a number of Vermont’s most popular breweries, including Magic Hat, Four Quarters Brewing Company and Switchback Brewing Company.

The Essex will celebrate beer throughout the month of April with other themed offerings. On April 7, Essex executive sous chef Brandy Allen will lead a five-hour tour of the area to visit and taste local beers; the tour is $69 per person. A number of local brewers will host tastings in the lobby throughout April, and the Junction, another resort restaurant, will suggest beer pairings with each dish. A Cook Academy 2.5-hour Cooking with Vermont Beer class will be offered at varying times and days each week for $98 per person. On Tuesday afternoons in April, guests can book a three-hour Brew Tour with Greg Doremus of Vermont Guided Tours.
