New fried chicken restaurants pop up across New York City every day, each championing their bird as the dish above all others. However, not many can compare to the fowl artistry found at Dirty Bird To-Go in Chelsea. Their menu may be costly, but it is equally as satisfying.
The interior of the restaurant is quaint but dense with character and appeal. Guests can order their food from the butcher-block counter and admire the interesting local art strewn across the walls while they wait for their piping hot dishes.
One look at their selection, and there’s no doubting why their motto is, “Fast Slow Food.” While the fried chicken (from $6.50 to $24.94 depending on order size) has a crust so thick it could be its own dish without the chicken, the rotisserie meal ($5.45 to $15.45) offers a lean, golden-crisp outer casing, with juicy-hot chicken inside. Both options are equally delectable.
Additionally, visitors can enjoy sides like sautéed garlic kale, coleslaw and smashed potatoes and gravy to name a few, all for $3.95. Their drinks include an assortment of bottled small-market sodas and carbonated drinks, including their very own “Dirty Palmer” ($2.95): one-half peach supreme iced tea, and one half homemade lemonade.
Their mac and cheese is nearly hidden on their menu, but it is perhaps their greatest achievement. The large macaroni noodles paired with its creamy, white, soupy cheese makes it a must-have side. And unlike the other sides on the menu, this one costs only $1
