Longer hiking trips require special preparation in many ways, including the food that we take with us. As well as being higher in fat and sugar than normal, a hiker’s diet should consist of foods that are easy to store and prepare in order to save time on the trail.
The following foods should be packed in reusable bags in order to cut down on the weight of packaging, and utensils and other superfluous items should be kept to a minimum for the duration of the hike.
A good selection of breakfast food includes muesli with powdered milk, oats, breakfast bars and fruit. Lunch on the first day could be a round of pre-prepared sandwiches, and on subsequent days hungry hikers could choose from a selection of dry crackers, bread, cured meats such as salami and jerky or cheese, which will keep well in cooler climates. High protein foods such as tuna and peanut butter are great options for meals and snacks, while a big bag of trail mix will keep you going throughout the day.
Perhaps the most challenging meal of the day is dinner, with many people relying on the same foods as at lunchtime. However, it is possible to bring some creativity to your evening meal, especially if you are carrying a pot and a stove, or have the ability to make a fire. One-pot recipes such as lentil stew can provide the evening energy boost that you need, while those who are traveling light can turn to dehydrated food, which you can either make yourself at home or buy from your local outdoor store.
