Tips / Travel

Foil meals are all-in-one packs of food perfect for camping. They are delicious, compact and easy to cook on an open fire. They are also endlessly customizable, great for last-minute clearing of the refrigerator and matching personal tastes. Before your next camping trip, grab a roll of aluminum foil and throw a few together for easy eating.

Ingredients

Starting with a large-ish square of foil, layer your ingredients in a way that allows them all to cook evenly. Heartier ingredients like onions can go on the bottom, followed by meat and topped with anything that can steam, such as potatoes or carrots. Stick to ingredients that aren’t too delicate. They will, after all, be cooking on hot coals.

Seasonings

Salt, pepper and dried herbs are great for these, as are things like Worcester sauce or BBQ sauce. Add plenty of seasoning, since you won’t be able to play around with the proportions when the packet is cooking.

Wrap It Up

The best way to get a good seal on a foil meal is to pull opposite sides together and fold them down in one direction. Once the packet is closed across the top, do the same at both ends, folding them in together and down sharply to make a rectangle. These should be airtight to allow all the food to cook, so make sure the edges are fully pressed!

Storage

Once you’ve got nice, flat packets put together, keep them in a cooler with ice and other cold foods. It’s important to make sure they stay cold, particularly if the veggies are chopped or peeled and they contain raw meat. Keep that in mind when selecting your ingredients, or bring along the ingredients and put the packets together on site if you won’t be able to keep them cold.
