Choosing A Budget Airline in Europe

Tips / Travel

While taking a train might be the most popular way of getting around Europe, it can actually be easier to fly. There are plenty of budget airlines available that’ll get you from place to place for less than $100. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your flight.

Watch for Fees

Airlines like Ryanair sometimes offer deals that seem too good to be true, and they can be if you’re not careful. That $8 flight from Berlin to Rome could end up being closer to $200 if you forget to check-in online, print your boarding pass ahead of time or go slightly over the carry-on limit. Follow their instructions to the tee, or you’ll be paying for it later.

Check for Perks

Budget airlines like easyJet typically aren’t going to offer food, drink or in-flight entertainment. Be sure to bring your own. The flights are usually short, so you won’t starve to death either way.

Do NOT Be Late

The budget airlines in Europe do not wait for late arrivals. Get to the airport early and don’t even think about cutting it close. You think regular airlines are tough on people who show up five minutes after boarding? You haven’t been on a budget airline.

Where’s the Airport?

One way in which budget airlines can offer lower rates is by flying into and out of smaller airports. That means they might put you further from your destination than planned. Always check where your airport is before booking. You might not end up saving any money at all if you have to drop too much for the cab ride home.
