Visiting the Greek Islands in the Off-Season

Destination

Greece is home to some 6,000 islands and islets, jewels strewn throughout the cobalt Aegean Sea. Every year, millions of visitors disembark from cruise ships, sailboats, ferries and airplanes to visit sought-after destinations like Santorini, Crete and Mykonos.

Most visitors come between spring and fall, because although the islands bring to mind white-sand beaches and tropical waters, the area actually turns chilly and windy come October. While you’ll experience significantly fewer visitors during the fall and winter months, you’ll also have to combat the chances of rough seas (which can delay or cancel ship routes), high winds and occasional blasts of cold air.

If you don’t mind skipping the beach and staying on dry land during your stay, the offseason means cheaper prices, better (and less distracted) service at restaurants and fewer crowds at top designations and popular attractions and sites, all of which can lead to a more positive experience if crowds aren’t your thing.

Still, you may find museums have reduced hours, that days are shorter and offer less time for exploring and taking photographs in sunlight and that you’ll need to pack more clothing for the cold season.
