Manila is a city of juxtaposition, with influences from regions all over the world convalescing in one sprawling city. It’s confusing, chaotic and astoundingly exhilarating all at the same time. Fitting everything in to one day is impossible, but there are a few places you just can’t miss.

Moving outside the city limits will be virtually impossible due to time constraints and budgets, so the famous Pagsanjan Falls and Taal Volcano are off limits this go around. No matter, there’s still plenty to see inside town.

Wake up early and make your way over to Intramuros, the 64-hecatare stone citadels that have been standing since 1571. It’s the historic center of town and contains unique Spanish architecture dating back centuries. Afterward, you can stop for breakfast at the nearby Ilustrado for a delicious, upscale breakfast. A meal here should cost no more than $10.

Afterward, head to the Makati district, the shopping hotspot of Manila. Here you’ll want to check out the Ayala Museum to get a feel for Filipino artwork both old and new. Entrance is only $10 per non-resident.

For lunch, make your way over to Eng Bee Tin, a Chinese restaurant with a little touch of Filipino flair. Their hopias are practically famous, so snack on a few of these before or after downing a meal. Prepare to drop roughly $20 on lunch.

The afternoon is the perfect time to shop. Spend a few hours weaving in and out of the various stores in the Makati district. The area has the look and feel of a major metropolitan city and you could easily get lost in the amount of retailers here.

For dinner, head to Casa Roces for a great mix of Spanish and Filipino food. The atmosphere is relaxing, though the price can be a little high. The pork belly is certainly worth it. A dinner here should cost no more than $20 per person.
