Trends / Food & Drink

There are about 15 large tents, each bringing something unique to the beer-soaked table every Oktoberfest. Here are six that are a guaranteed fun time.

Schützen Festzelt

This beer tent is a cultural meeting point, formerly congregated by older generations, but since taking on a mix of patrons. It’s known for serving malt beers and roasted pig, in addition to offering 110 shooting range lanes.

Schottenhamel

Oktoberfest’s second biggest tent is also old. It used to be 50 farmers squeezed into a wooden barn that was Schottenhamel, but today it is known for being popular with the under-21 crowd. It is also where the introductory beer tapping takes place.

Augustiner-Bräu

Founded by Augustinian monks, Augustiner-Bräu is Munich’s oldest brewery, and to this day continues to serve Oktoberfest with authentic wooden barrels (the other tents have a fake wood façade covering a metal vat).

Hofbräu-Festzelt

The largest tent of Oktoberfest has 10,000 seats. Over the course of two weeks, it serves 782,400 liters of beer, 70,700 barbecue chicken halves, 6,200 pork sausages and 4,200 pork hocks.

Weinzelt

Also known as Kuffler’s wine tent, Weinzelt serves white beer until 9 p.m., after which they only have wine, sparkling wine and Champagne until 1 a.m. (most tents close at 10:30 p.m.).

Hippodrom

The Hippodrom is one of the festival’s most recognizable tents thanks to its colorful exterior. The name translates to “horse race place,” after the historic tradition started by King Ludwig in 1810.
