The striking Columbia River Gorge cuts a dramatic gash along the Washington–Oregon border. The area is rife with hikes (most of which visit waterfalls), breweries and wineries, locally focused restaurants and Lewis and Clark history.
To start, breakfast at Broder Ost for Scandinavian specialties like lefse and aebelskiver. Budget around $20.
Next, head to one of the incredible waterfalls nearby, combining two or three short hikes. Multnomah Falls, Panther Creek Falls, Punch Bowl Falls and more are worth checking out. Another great option is Beacon Rock, where the trail scales an ancient volcanic plug for outstanding views of the gorge. You’ll need to purchase a $5 Northwest Forest Pass to park at any of the trailheads.
For lunch, hit a nearby brewery, several of which have good food that will fuel the rest of your day. Backwoods Brewing, Double Mountain and Full Sail are great picks. Budget $25.
Dedicate your afternoon to soaking up a bit of history at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum, which covers early human history up to modern times, including the passage of the Lewis and Clark expedition through the area. Admission is $10.
Last, dine at top-notch restaurant and brewery pFriem Family Brewers, where your remaining $40 will serve you well for beer and dinner.
