Under $100 / North America

You may find yourself on Route 66 one day passing through Arizona. If you do, be sure to stop in Holbrook on your way to the Petrified Forest National Park, where you can see petrified wood, visit the Puerco Pueblo and walk the Blue Mesa trail. Entry to the park costs $20 for a car. Holbrook itself is worth a half-day visit at the very least.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Joe and Aggie’s Café located at 120 West Hopi Blvd. This Mexican American restaurant offers great food and a lot of character. A meal for two will cost approximately $25. Before or after lunch visit the Navajo County Historical Society Museum and Courthouse. Local residents claim it is haunted, but it is hard to say for sure. You will find ephemera from the town’s history, including its significance for the Pony Express.

There is also a small library adjoining the museum that contains important documents from the town, such as school records, obituaries and marriage licenses. The town itself is a great place to drive around because of its eclectic collection of historic motels including the Wigwam Motel, as well as its display of dinosaur statues that can be seen all around town. These pay tribute to the town’s fossil record.

Stop by the Rainbow Rock Shop to find legal pieces of petrified wood for purchasing since taking pieces from the national park is prohibited. Finally, on your way out of town, check out the Bucket of Blood Saloon at 119 S.C. Ave. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been around since the 1890s. It provides an excellent reminder of the saloon culture of the Wild West. A couple of drinks will cost you around $10, but you’ll get a few stories on the house.
