Tips / Travel

There are so many fun activities available during the summer, from weekend getaways to sandy shores to sidewalk brunches with your friends, music festivals to glamping trips, that after a month or two, your wallet may start to look a little sad. Need to save a few dollars so you can get back in the fun? Fun and frugal aren’t necessarily opposites — here are a few ways you can have fun this summer on a budget.

Take Advantage of Free Events

Many cities host free public events throughout the summer, whether downtown festivals with live music, art fairs or holiday events. Keep an eye on your city’s social media feeds for info on free activities coming up in your neighborhood.

See the Sites

Take a look at your city through a tourist’s eyes. What are the historical spots, monuments and museums that are big hits with first-time visitors? How long has it been since you visited the spots that put your city on the map? Many are free, particularly those with historic recognition.

Get Outdoors

You often won’t have to travel far to enjoy the great outdoors, no matter where you live. Head to the nearest park, whether a city green space or a nearby state or national park, to hike, bike or picnic while enjoying the warm summer weather and a friend or two. A simple weekend activity, it’s an affordable way to get some Vitamin D and enjoy the summer before it’s gone.

Find a Seasonal Hobby

Summer is a great time to take on an extra hobby that’ll not only introduce you to new people, but also get you involved in your community. Check your local MeetUp, parks and recreation websites and libraries for adults-only groups that focus on everything from fiction writing to team sports.

Start a New Tradition

Get a group of your friends together and start a new summer tradition. Maybe you and your three favorite girlfriends take turns hosting a themed weekend brunch. Maybe several couples get together for a barbecue and beer every other week. Whatever your choice may be, both you and your friends may find your new tradition even more enjoyable than just another weekend hitting the same wine bars and restaurants.

Where Can You Find the Mai Tai Mile?

Stay at Kona Village on the Big Island of Hawai’i and you may think your experience consists solely of private, residential-style luxury and perhaps the occasional fresh pineapple, but Rosewood Resort has something else a little special. More specifically, Kona Village has its very own Mai Tai Mile, where guests can find four unique and different takes on the Mai Tai. Each distinct drink is inspired by its setting and comes with its own story.
