Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., with some of the most beautiful views of the nation’s capital, Alexandria, Virginia, is one of the most endearing small cities in America. From the historic charm of Old Town to the artistic development of the waterfront and the bohemian flair of Del Ray, Alexandria has something for everyone. With increased attention comes an ever-exploding culinary scene and, despite its size, Alexandria already overflows with excellent options. These five will give you the best representation of the city’s diverse scene.
For now, you can only find Meggrolls in Alexandria, but don’t expect that to last. These oversized crispy wonton rolls are stuffed with incarnations of every imaginable meal and snack from chicken Parm and broccoli mac to lamb gyro and Buffalo wings. What started as a food truck is now a beloved restaurant with a rotating menu of whatever creator and owner Meghan Baroody is currently dreaming up.
For the ice cream lover, The Creamery is a top shop among Alexandria’s inexplicably massive ice cream selection. This is the city’s oldest, continuously operating ice cream shop and it serves small-batch ice creams, specializing in flavors with Southern flair (try banana pudding).
A can’t-miss dinner in Alexandria, reserve a table at Vermillion for an unforgettable meal of modern American fare created from seasonal ingredients sourced locally and farm-raised whenever possible, and served in the warm ambiance of Vermillion’s dark woods, exposed brick walls and seductive red accents.
Fresh tortillas and Oaxaca corn are just two examples of Urbano 116’s devotion to authentic Mexican cuisine. New this year, Urbano 116’s modern interior combined with updated takes on traditional Mexican dishes brings a decidedly vibrant edge to King Street’s restaurant scene.
Breakfast anywhere else would be unforgivable. Stomping Ground’s famous buttermilk biscuits get top billing at this casual Del Ray eatery featuring primarily organic ingredients that are seasonal and local whenever possible.
