Velas Vallarta Annouces New Equinox and Solstice Ceremonies

Velas Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, offers guests a chance to learn about the local Huichol culture with new equinox and solstice ceremonies. Huichol, a Mexican indigenous group, can be found in Jalisco, Nayarit, Zacatecas and Durango. The resort offers different activities where guests can immerse themselves in the important culture during the spring and autumn equinox and the summer and winter solstice.

Experts of the Huichol or Wixárika culture lead the ceremonies. Throughout, guests are taught various chants and prayers dedicated to the four elements of fire, water, earth and air, thanking the elements for life. After the chants, participate in an offering of Copal with candles and flowers to showcase gratitude. Copal has been used for centuries throughout different cultures to purify the environment and keep evil spirits away. Guests will also enjoy traditional music, dancing and Mexican dishes.

The ceremonies, also known as hikuri, will be held on the beach on:

• March 20: Spring equinox celebrates the end of winter and fresh beginnings
• June 21: Summer solstice marks the longest day of the year and the start of summer
• 23: Autumnal equinox marks a time to give thanks to harvest and honor the changing seasons
• 22: Winter solstice celebrates the cycle of nature and marks the day of the sun’s rebirth
