You hear or think of Detroit, Michigan, and manufacturing and industrial factories, towering buildings, and densely packed streets likely come to mind. But the city holds a vibrant and burgeoning food and farming scene when you look closer. Across the city, once-empty lots transform into networks of urban farms, reshaping neighborhoods, and autumn is when you can best see the hard work from these urban farms come to life.
From cider mills to fresh produce to fall harvest festivals, these Detroit-based farms lead the urban farming renaissance, and you can see and experience it for yourself:
The largest urban farm within city limits, run by the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network, grows more than 30 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs each season. Visit for yourself and join guided tours, field trips or roll up your own sleeves and volunteer alongside local growers.
Head to Detroit’s first cider mill, spanning more than 130 fruit trees and its own solar-powered farm. The property presses its own cider, hosts farm-to-table dinners and offers the classic cider mill experience, all in the heart of Detroit.
Earthworks Urban farm is a 1.25-acre certified organic farm run by Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The property offers a weekly Meldrum Fresh Market farm stand, volunteer programs and self-guided tours.
Across nearly 2 acres, Fisheye Farms grows sustainable produce and hosts weekly events. For instance, on Fridays, farmstands and cider pressings occur, and if you dine at any number of Detroit restaurants (Coriander Kitchen and Farm, Madusa Cucina, Mad Nice, Marrow and Supino, to name just a few), you may be eating produce right from Fisheye Farms.
This farm grows more than 33 kinds of produce, selling every Saturday at Eastern Market. The farm also runs the Harvest on Demand service, letting the community pick up fresh orders at Community House.
