With such a varied landscape, two coasts and a huge number of waterways, it should come as no surprise Guatemala is a great place for adventurous travelers.
You can take part in myriad tours in the country, including hiking, diving and caving. Set off into the jungles of Peten on a five-day trek to the Mayan ruins of El Mirador, or take on the famous trails of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes to see the soaring peaks of the western Highlands.
If you prefer to conquer peaks, book a tour to climb Acatenango Volcano near Antigua, or head to Tajumulco in the north. The latter is the tallest peak in Central America, so an ascent will certainly make for an impressive story.
Those who enjoy exploring on two wheels will enjoy the mountain bike park at El Zur, where almost 16 miles of trails snake around the lower slopes of a volcano near Antigua. Alternatively take an ATV tour of the valley near Antigua to see local life in the picturesque Panchoy Valley.
Other attractions include caving at Caxlampon near Rio Dulce and, of course, the unforgettable pools of Semuc Champey in the center of the country. There are also some small caves you can explore by candlelight.
