Tips / Destination

Merida is the capital of the Yucatan province and it has a cultural life that more than matches that status.

Across town there are a number of art galleries well worth a visit. One of the top options is La Cupula, a cultural center that hosts regular events as well as art exhibitions. Check out the schedule for the Thursday night events or visit during the day to see the art.

Take a look at the work of emerging artists at the Fundacion de Artistas, a non-profit found on 55th street. There is a program of activities alongside art exhibitions you can visit whenever you like.

Another good gallery is La Eskalera, which exhibits works by artists from across Mexico. Its setting inside a colonial house makes for a seriously impressive viewing experience thanks to the high ceilings.

International artists are a regular feature at Soho Galleries, while Mexican and Cuban artists are also well-represented. The space has been open since 2008 and often puts on workshops alongside the exhibitions.

Visitors should also stop in at Galeria Tataya, which actually has two locations in Merida. The focus is on local artists, and most of the works are for sale so you can take home a unique souvenir if you see something that takes your fancy.
