Art is increasingly important to Naples’ cultural scene, with a growing number of galleries popping up around the city. Here are some of the best ones to visit.
Madre is known as one of the best spots for contemporary art in Naples, if not the whole of Italy. It’s right in the middle of town and houses works by contemporary greats such as Jeff Koons and Richard Serra.
The Palace for the Arts in Naples is housed inside a historic building called the Palazzo Roccella, and doesn’t have a permanent collection. Instead it has a rotating cast of works, with exhibitions that have won the gallery a strong reputation.
Largo Baracche Art Space is remarkable for its location as well as the art it exhibits. Deep in the Spanish Quarter, this space is housed in a set of subterranean tunnels originally designed as bomb shelters during WWII. Now it features contemporary art in a space run by local artists themselves.
Galleria Lia Rumma is another destination gallery, run by the eponymous gallerist who has been working in the art world since the 1970s. There is also an outpost in Milan if you are on a longer Italy trip.
