Food & Drink

Traveling when you are vegan or vegetarian can be a little worrisome, especially if you aren’t familiar with the food scene. To help ease the stress and give you a guide, WalletHub, a personal finance website, released a report on 2021’s Best Cities for Vegan & Vegetarians.

To determine the best and cheapest places for following a plant-based diet, WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities across 16 key indicators of vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness. The data set ranges from the share of restaurants serving meatless options to the cost of groceries for vegetarians to salad shops per capita.

Some of the findings include, Scottsdale, Arizona, with the highest share of restaurants serving vegetarian options as well as the highest share of restaurants serving vegan options. Travelers should be careful when visiting Laredo, Texas, and North Las Vegas, Nevada, both the cities with the least amount of vegan and vegetarian restaurants.

Meanwhile, San Francisco has the most community-supported agriculture programs, where San Antonio has the fewest. Miami, Florida, has the most salad shops per square root of population and North Las Vegas has the least.

Overall, the five top cities with the most vegan- and vegetarian-friendly cities are:

  1. Portland, Oregon
  2. Orlando, Florida
  3. Los Angeles, California
  4. San Francisco, California
  5. Boise, Idaho
