People rave about the food in Brooklyn, but northern Manhattan is serving some delicious food as well, and the cuisine remains true to its roots. Be sure to check out one of these six great Harlem restaurants.

Jin Ramen

Jin is Kanji for benevolence and it exemplifies the neighborhood outreach done by the restaurant’s owners, long-standing members of Harlem active in the community. Jin Ramen is most known for miso ramen, a pork bone broth simmered for hours and served with yuzo-kosho chili pepper.

Rao’s

One of the most exclusive restaurants in Harlem is Rao’s, started in 1896 by Charles Rao who moved to America from Italy with his parents and ran the restaurant until 1909. Louis Rao ran the business for another 90 years, turning it into one of the most famous restaurants in New York, eventually opening two more locations and becoming a fixture for the Italian-American community.

Abyssinia

Frehiwot Rita used to make and sell injera, the staple flatbread of Ethiopia, from the kitchen of her own home, popular with Ethiopian expatriates in New York City. She was so successful she used the money to start her own brick and mortar store, selling chicken doro wat, berbere sauce, sambusa and even tej.

Amy Ruth’s

When one thinks of chicken and waffles, Roscoe’s usually comes to mind, yet the dish actually originated in New York before becoming a southern staple. Amy Ruth’s might be the best place for New York soul food, where many of the dishes are named after famous patrons like Reverend Al Sharpton and Doug E. Fresh.

Harlem Tavern

For ardent foodies, there are better places to go for chowing down, but for summer in Harlem there’s nothing better than sitting on the patio and drinking a glass of one of its many draft beers.
