The seaside city of Bari is famous for seafood, but there is plenty more to its culinary scene than that.
That said you would be silly not to indulge in some of the fruits of the sea, and the seafood market is the best spot to get some of the fresh catch at bargain prices. Think oysters, squid and sea urchins served at outside tables, with a mixed plate likely to cost around €5.
Mastro Ciccio is slightly more formal, a sandwich joint great for lunch and casual evening meals. It’s known for favoring local ingredients, and also puts together a mean salad.
Terranima is a classic taverna where you will feel like you’re going back in time as you drag your period chair over the flagstone floors, preparing to tuck into Puglian favorites like veal, caper and lemon meatballs.
For a romantic meal, try the shady garden at Piccinni 28. Pizza and seafood dominate, and there is a good selection of wine and craft beers.
Osterias don’t get much more traditional than Paglionico Vini e Cucina, a casual tavern that serves every client the same menu of the day. If you’re hungry just sit down and see what comes, but if not beware the fact that staff expect customers to eat three or four courses.
