Visit Finland shared more about a new health trend growing in popularity throughout the country and across generations. In Finland, winter is one of the most popular times to enjoy a swim, with younger generations embracing the season for a dynamic range of health benefits.
Elina Mäkinen, a well-known Finnish winter swimmer and international TikTok sensation, shares her favorite winter swimming spots in the world’s happiest country. Through her TikTok, Elina encourages others to tap into sisu, a unique Finnish form of courage and resilience, and urges travelers and locals to embrace the power of the cold.

“Cold water is the key to everything. The ice hole where I swim is a holy place for me, as it allows me to maintain my wellbeing and get rid of stress through this mindful practice that energises my mind and body,” said Mäkinen.
Elina Mäkinen’s five recommended winter swimming spots for first-timers are:
- Fell Centre Kiilopää
- Joensuun Jääkarhut
- Arctic Sauna World
- Löyly
- Lake Heikinjärvi at Isokenkäisten klubi Wilderness Lodges
The health benefits of winter swimming include generating hormones like endorphins, boosting serotonin and dopamine, boosting blood circulation, improving your immune system and activating brown fat tissue, which burns calories in order to maintain body temperature.

Insta FeedAre You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?
Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
