Online reservations giant Booking.com introduced a new mobile app aimed at spontaneous travelers, after research showed more than half of last-minute bookings were made on mobile devices. The app, known as Booking Now, is made for travelers booking a room within 48 hours of their planned check-in. As such, it will not replace the standard Booking.com app, but work alongside it, with a focus on a specific group of users.

The overall premise is a familiar one: finding nearby hotels and allowing you to compare prices, availability and amenities. With Booking Now, one difference is the focus on finding hotels in your vicinity which meet your requirements, which the app calculates after you enter some minimal default preference details.

This level of personalization is inspired by the success of apps such as Uber and Tinder, and Booking.com claims the app will become increasingly personalized the more you use it, as it becomes aware of your preferences based on past searches and bookings.

Users have access to the network of more than 618,000 properties included on the normal Booking.com app, which gives Booking Now an advantage over rival last-minute booking apps such as HotelTonight. By storing payment credentials, the app allows for “two tap” bookings, perfect for those looking for a room in a hurry.

Booking Now is currently only available on the iPhone, but there are plans to release an Android app imminently. Soon users of any mobile platform won’t have to worry about finding a hotel room if they miss the last train home.
