As a beer and brewery fan, I have visited several over the past few years, including renowned spots like Dogfish, Russian River, Allagash, Maine Beer Company and Lagunitas, and smaller venues like Cellarmaker, Oxbow and Tired Hands. Carton Brewing Company is one of my favorites, with a delicious selection of hop-forward brews, a continuously evolving tap list and a friendly atmosphere in New Jersey’s Atlantic Highlands.
My most recent visit took place at the start of the fall. My group of friends and I made the 1.5-hour trek to North Jersey from Philadelphia to try new additions to the micro-brewery’s menu in the tasting room as well as pick up some cans of our favorites.
New on tap was Intermezzo, a flavorful sour ale with green apple and wasabi, and Dune Fruit, a funky sour ale with notes of pear. We enjoyed both new brews, as well as the brewery’s staples, including Boat Beer, a crisp, hoppy session ale; 077XX, a double IPA with enough hops to knock your socks off; HopPun, a hoppy American pale ale; Carton of Milk, a sweet stout; and Brunch. Dinner. Grub., a brown country ale.
All visitors are required by New Jersey state law to do a quick free tour of the small facility led by one of the polite staffers before they can head upstairs to the cozy taproom to enjoy six 4-ounce samples of brews on tap for $5.
Since co-owner Augie Carton opened Carton in his hometown in 2011, the brewery has become popular, attracting locals as well as visitors from around the Northeast and even farther away. The brewery plans to expand in the near future to an older commercial property next door.
