Catalonia is one of many political divisions in Spain. The region consists of four provinces, Barcelona (the capital), Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, and the official languages are Spanish and Catalan. Catalan is a mixture of Latin, Italian and French dialects combined to make one language.

The Catalonian people usually think of themselves as being a part of a separate nation, and some of them go to the extreme of only using the Catalan language. The nation has its own rules, laws and customs, and the residents are fighting for the region to be an independent nation for economic and political reasons. This has led to protestors being called “separatists.”

The Catalonian people continue to protest in the streets to continue their fight for Catalonia to secede from Spain. This has yet to be ratified by the Spanish government.

Spain is the kingdom that houses the Catalonian l nation. The official language of the country is Spanish, and the capital city is Madrid. The country is blocking Catalonia’s vie for independence because the Catalonians contribute immensely to the country’s economy. In 2017, the Spanish courts banned an independence referendum, and the country’s capital exacted rule of the region.

There continue to be protests that sometimes can get violent and lead to arrests. However, this issue between the Catalonians and the Spanish people should not stop you from enjoying your vacation in Spain.
