The month of February marks the celebration of African American History Month. The observance began in 1926 as Negro History Week and was celebrated during the first week of February. In 1976, the observance was expanded to a full month under the new title, African American History Month. February holds significance, as it is the birth month of two Americans who played a prominent role in shaping black history: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Since its inception, African American History Month aims to pay tribute to the struggle of generations of African Americans as well as celebrating their achievements and contributions. The current celebration is due in part to the efforts of The Library of Congress, the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institute, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Browse the website for a complete listing of exhibits and collections from these organizations. In addition, audio/video, image and educational material are available.

To celebrate African American history year-round, visit the resources on the Association for the Study of African American Life and History website or sign up to become a member.
