Restaurant

Peruvian cuisine has boomed in London in recent years and Ceviche Old Street is one of three locations owned by Martin Morales.

The restaurant is housed on the ground floor of a historic Victorian dining room, and still features the original tiled walls. Peruvian favorites such as lomo saltado (strips of beef on French fries) and pollo a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) are served in a space large without feeling cavernous, whose walls are adorned with the works of some of Peru’s most well-renowned contemporary artists.

Morales has gone with a sharing concept at Ceviche Old Street, and diners are encouraged to order a number of small plates to share. If you don’t like the idea, it’s tough. The only full meals on the menu are roast dinners on Sunday, but ordering a lot of small plates gives you the chance to try a lot of different Peruvian specialties.

The dishes are all incredibly tasty and include some of the country’s most famous foods. The ceviche serves as a great starter and combines well with the pastel de choclo (corn mash pie). Other dishes include adobo de pato (marinated duck) and skewered cow hearts.

Service is attentive and the ambience is great. The dishes we tried were wonderful, and there are ample cocktails, wines and beers to choose from. One small disappointment is the inclusion of just one Peruvian beer, Cuzquena, but that is a minor detail that should not take the shine off a great restaurant. The bill came to $80 for two with drinks.
