Trends / Sports

In what might be the most interesting combination of divergent sporting events in the world, the Germans have hosted chess boxing matches for well over a decade. The hybrid game/sport involves alternating matches of chess and boxing, requiring you to be both sharp in mind and fighting skills.

Opponents have two ways to win — either checkmate or by knocking your opponent out. It’s the most aggressive chess match in history and, frankly, kind of amazing. Each match is composed of speed chess lasting four minutes, then they switch to the ring for another three.

The world championship occurs each year in Berlin, the original home of chess boxing, usually around October. Those looking to participate make their way up through the league. Of course, you’re always free to be a spectator.

Organizers claim that though it’s a sporting event, the championship is also a mind-blowing spectacle. Lest you think the competition is full of scrawny versions of Urkel slapping the air around them, chess boxers are heavily trained athletes in fantastic shape. They engage in interval training all year long in order to prepare for the ring.

It’s certainly one of the most unique sporting events around and worth a visit if you find yourself in Berlin this fall.
