Destinations

Having plenty of dining and drinking options on a vacation is practically an essential on a city vacation. But some cities have far more restaurants and cafés within walking distance than others.

The city with the highest café and restaurant density in the world may come as no surprise: Paris, France, boasts 17,000 restaurants and cafés, with an average of 161.9 restaurants and cafés per square kilometer, the most Instagrammed of which is Café de Flore.

Lisbon, Portugal, has the second-highest café and restaurant density. With 8,167 outlets, you’ll find an average of 81.67 restaurants and cafés per square kilometer. The city’s most popular café is Hello, Kristof. Lisbon is also the cheapest of the top 10 cities for a three-course meal for two, averaging just $54.

What other cities have high densities of cafés and restaurants? Look to Brussels, Belgium; New York City, New York; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Madrid, Spain; Los Angeles, California; Stockholm, Sweden; Bern, Switzerland; and Singapore. New York City’s most Instagrammed café is Bluestone Lane, while Alfred Coffee in Los Angeles appears the most on Instagram for LA-based cafés.

These cities were named based on a study by The Perfect Rug, analyzing the size of each city and the number of cafés and restaurants to calculate the number of cafés and restaurants per square kilometer. Data was taken from Google Maps and TripAdvisor, as well as average prices for each city. Date about Internet popularity based on Instagram hashtags was then added.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
