It is probably true not many people would travel for the express purpose of having a picnic, but there are many destinations that lend themselves quite nicely to the idea of dining in nature.
One surefire way to turn an average trip and picnic into a once-in-a-lifetime experience is to picnic in a scenic national park. You can pick any national park with enough outdoor space to picnic, but the National Park Service has a trusty breakdown of nine parks great for picnicking.
Some of the standouts from the National Park Services’ recommendations include the Colorado National Monument and Greenbelt Park in Maryland. Greenbelt is a short drive from the capital, making it a great spot for a daytrip when you are visiting the capital.
For a historical picnic, consider taking a trip to Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts. You can picnic on the pond that inspired Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. In the south, check out Covert Park, near Austin, Texas, for a nice little escape.
Whenever you are traveling somewhere new that involves a hike, make sure to be prepared for the opportunity for an impromptu picnic, because you never know when the moment will call for a meal in nature.
